It’s no longer a question of “if” or even “when” generative AI (GenAI) will impact our lives. Like it or not, GenAI is already transforming our daily routines. It is redefining the future of work and reshaping how and what we learn.

Simultaneously, GenAI offers corporate L&D organizations powerful new ways to accelerate this workforce transformation. In fact, I’ve never been more excited about the potential to streamline work processes and improve learner outcomes. It’s a great time to be working in L&D!

How GenAI is giving the L&D function some fresh fuel

For L&D professionals, AI creates new opportunities for personal growth. It empowers those who embrace it to free up time to think strategically.

Recent analysis from Mercer shows that AI and automation are augmenting L&D activities, particularly in program design and delivery. The shift means that L&D experts can concentrate on what truly matters—using their authentic intelligence to align learning strategies with organizational goals and drive growth.

Here are some of the areas where AI is impacting L&D:

  • Democratizing knowledge: GenAI puts just-in-time specialty knowledge within reach for all employees, regardless of their role or location.
  • Producing L&D content: Gone are the days when generating content took weeks, if not months. GenAI makes it possible to draft high-quality learning resources quickly and cost effectively. Imagine being able to easily update your curriculum to reflect the latest trends and information—GenAI makes that possible.
  • Personalizing L&D delivery: Innovative learning platforms are changing the paradigm. By analyzing learner performance and preferences, these GenAI platforms make it possible to create personalized learning paths that cater to individual needs.
  • Driving the skills-powered revolution: With GenAI, we can move beyond the traditional “sheep dip” approach to training. Predictive analytics and AI-powered insights can identify and prioritize individual and organizational skill gaps.

With these capabilities (and many more), AI is set to revolutionize corporate learning, making it more agile, responsive, and effective. Think:

  • Sophisticated sim personas—with predefined traits augmented by generative AI—provide a safe space for learners to practice challenging conversations and to fail forward without the fear of consequences.
  • AI agents that analyze learner responses to identify skill gaps and adapt content and learning paths in real time.

GenAI is here to help employers develop and deploy skills at unprecedented scale and speed.

Stats and facts about the role of generative AI in L&D

The potential of AI in L&D is not just theoretical; it’s backed by compelling data:

  • Personalized learning programs powered by GenAI can boost employee engagement, according to Deloitte
  • Tailored learning experiences improve knowledge retention rates by 25-60%, as reported in the Journal of Applied Psychology
  • Research from the Brandon Hall Group shows that AI-driven analytics can significantly enhance L&D efficiency, streamline processes and reduce costs
  • More generally, a Gartner survey found that 79% of corporate strategists view AI and analytics as crucial for success in the next two years

Innovation or illusion?

While there’s absolutely no doubt that AI has a lot to offer, it’s important to approach it thoughtfully. As those of us who have been developing learning solutions using GenAI since the early days have seen, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. Here’s my cautionary point: AI isn’t a magic wand. It has its strengths, sure, but it also has its limitations

I encourage learning leaders to set realistic expectations and focus on areas where AI can make a real difference—like personalizing learning experiences or using predictive analytics. Be strategic, align AI initiatives with critical business goals to maximize impact. And don’t forget, the quality of inputs matter; good data is the fuel for any AI engine.

Learning and Technology Consultant Egle Vinauskaite has reverse engineered successful AI use cases to present a simple framework:

  1. What is the business problem?
  2. How can L&D help?
  3. Where and how can AI support us?

She concludes: “AI is an amazing technology. But if we don’t understand the problems we’re solving for our people and organizations, we’ll end up using AI to scale things that don’t need to be scaled.”
